Getting down to business

My way of working depends on what task it is. However I have some go-to points that I would like to share.

Getting started

Before I start sketching I need input. What I need can be anything of the following:

  • Background information from stakeholder, Service/Product owner or anyone else that know more about the case

  • User research. If there is none and it is a bigger task I strongly recommend doing initial research.

  • Current/Previous design. I need to understand what the solution looks like today and why it’s not working.

  • Testing the solution. Super important to understand user flows regardless of product or service.

Designing

Once I have what I need I start sketching out ideas. I believe it’s important to get feedback on my design early. I start by getting feedback from other designers and hearing their thoughts, iterate on the design and then test it on users when I feel ready. Iteration doesn’t stop there, the feedback from the users will of course affect the design and I’ll make the improvements needed before handing over to developers.
